Transforming a Small Fundraiser into a Recognizable Artisan Market

Made Market began as a small church fundraiser in San Diego. Previously known as Project Messy, the event attracted approximately 200 attendees and featured a loose mix of handmade businesses and multilevel marketing vendors.

It raised some money, but it lacked a clear identity, strong visibility, and a compelling reason for people outside the existing church community to attend.

The Big Win

Made Market increased fundraising revenue by more than 500%, attracted hundreds of attendees in a single day, and became a repeatable event held annually, and at times, semiannually, raising thousands of dollars.

The Challenge

The event did not simply need more promotion. It needed to become more marketable.

The original event had:

  • No distinct brand or visual identity
  • Limited marketing beyond the church community
  • An inconsistent vendor mix
  • Little name recognition
  • No clear strategy for attracting high-quality vendors or a larger audience

The goal was to transform it from a small pop-up fundraiser into an artisan market people would intentionally plan to visit.

The Strategy

The event was completely repositioned around high-quality, handcrafted artisan products.

That included:

  • Renaming the event Made Market
  • Developing a new logo and visual identity
  • Creating professional product photography
  • Building a stronger presence on Instagram
  • Defining the audience more clearly
  • Selecting vendors intentionally rather than simply filling spaces
  • Positioning the event as a public shopping experience, not only a church fundraiser

Every part of the event needed to communicate the same thing: this was a thoughtfully curated market featuring quality independent makers.
